Preview :
The lockout made for a frustrating and far too long wait for the NBA season, but the dream matchups on the preseason schedule will prove that the 2011 was well worth the wait. The defending champion Dallas Mavericks take the floor against Kevin Durant's upstart Thunder. The Mavs are coming off a dream season with the perfect ending and the Thunder have a squad jam-packed with some of the best young talent in the game. While it's preseason basketball, fans in Dallas are sure to welcome their team back with a tremendous reception and the Thunder would like nothing more than to show that they've got what it takes to compete with the best the NBA has to offer.Let's take a look at how these two teams stack up.

Where: American Airlines Center (Dallas, Texas)
Watch: KTXA (Home)
When: Sunday, Dec. 18 at 7:30 p.m. EST
Listen: 103.3 KESN-FM
Betting Line: Dallas -2.5 (according to Pinnacle, via Donbest)

Take the points. Don't let the ring fool you into thinking the Mavs have a distinct advantage. Lamar Odom isn't going to be able to fill the Tyson Chandler void right away. Dallas has more adjusting to do than the Thunder do and will have a few minor kinks to take care of during the preseason.

Dallas:Roddy Beaubois, PG (foot). Probable for start of season.

What's at Stake
It's preseason basketball. A loss for either team doesn't mean anything, but it would be nice to get the season started off on the right foot.Durant and Dirk Nowitzki are both contenders for MVP honors this season and these teams could easily see each other in the playoffs. The most important part of preseason basketball is shaking off the rust and getting back into the swing of playing, but winning certainly helps.

What They're Saying
Kevin Durant speaks at Thunder's Media Day.Lamar Odom talks about being a Dallas Maverick and more.

Thunder Player to Watch: James Harden

James Harden has the potential to be an elite 2-guard. He hasn't validated the Thunder's No. 3 overall selection to this point, but he's a huge part of the young crop of talent the Thunder are putting forth.Harden has shown that he can be a superstar. He's a guy who could have a breakout season and show the world that he can be a lethal scorer at the highest level. A strong showing in the first preseason game is just the start he needs.

Mavericks Player to Watch: Lamar Odom
Lamar Odom fell into an ideal situation. He gets to play alongside Nowitzki and compete for a championship right away. The Mavs were able to bring in a championship primarily because of the success they saw in their frontcourt. Odom doesn't have to be "the guy," but he's got to be anxious to show Dallas fans that he's not just along for the ride; he can be a key component in their repeat aspirations.

Key Matchup: Kevin Durant vs. Dirk Nowitzki
It's going to be interesting to see these two elite players go at it. They are both capable of dropping absurd points on any given night and though their minutes will likely be used sparingly, they are the reason this game draws such interest.

Mavericks 103, Thunder 99
